Ferries, chariots, and lots and lots of gyros

15 June 2018

Woke up on the ferry and disembarked around 6:30am in Piraeus excited to head to Delphi. Delphi was thought to be the centre of the earth at the time. The story behind it being that, Zeus sent two eagles from opposite sides of the earth and where their paths crossed, he threw down a stone and marked it as the centre.

A few hours drive and we arrived in Delphi, walking the same path as Socrates and Hadrian! Before we explored the ruins, we indulged in Greek "junk" food and had gyros.

We found the Oracle of Delphi!
The Stadium (think races)

Having deep, philosophical discussions, perhaps?

We drove the remaining 3 hours to Meteora, dropped our bags, and walked into town in search of dinner and a TV to watch the Spain-Portugal match. After 30 minutes of searching, we finally found a cafe where the owner was willing to switch on the game for us. He had plenty of beer but he didn't serve dinner food. However, he ordered delivery for us. Gyros. Again! Best gyros we've had thus far and big beers to go with it. He was so friendly and no doubt he found us to be extremely charming. An older gentleman who appeared to possibly be the owner's father, was very accommodating--moving tables and chairs, turning on TVs, and then telling us stories of his parents moving to the US during WWII. We had part of that conversation in gestures and German, naturally, because he doesn't speak English. Thankfully, a few of us have some rudimentary German skills so we could collectively piece together what he was trying to get across.
